The Katapola of Amorgos, with its narrow inlet has 380 inhabitants and is one of the island’s two ports. It is a natural harbor and has three distinct neighbourhoods. You wll meet “Katapola” neighbourhood on your left, where the ferries dock, “Rachidi” in the center and “Xylokeratidi” on your right.
The harbor was initially settled by seamen, while today a large number of shops, restaurants and hotel appear during the summer season, making the port an attraction for business and tourist activities. Nature lovers can opt for the recently-renovated Municipal Campsite of Katapola for their accommodation , just a few meters from the port. At the port, you will also see yachts and other boats mainly during summer months.
At Katapola port you will enjoy your swim in the nearby beaches, you will have sunset walks along the port and inside the narrow village streets! The cobbled streets within Katapola are lined with orchards ad verdant citrus trees. Take plenty of photographs, combining them with the beautiful Cycladic architecture.
The settlement of Katapola is embraced by Mountoulia mountain capped by the ancient city of Minoa. The chapel of Agios Panteleimonas is visible on the opposite side, after Xylokeratidi.
On the way to the village exit (on the road to Chora of Amorgos) reaching Rachidi, you will come across the neoclassical building of the Primary school of the port. Before the ort exit, you will enjoy the aegean sunset on the benches along the road. The settlement of Rachidi is adorned by the imposing church of Agios Georgios.
By walking along the port settlement and following a dirt track, you will approach the Panagia chapel, next to the sea at the fringes of Mountoulia hill. Then, heading west, you will come across the Statue of Erato, permanently overlooking at the sea.
Xylokeratidi Katapola Amorgos
Xylokeratidi neighbourhood extends along the coastal road opposite the port section of Katapola and it still maintains its maritime and island element, as the shipbuilding and docking center of the island.
Here you will find some houses built literally on the seaside! A footpath leading out of the neighbourhood will take you to vaulted tombs from Mycenaean era, while another footpath will take you to Evangelistria church (from the early Byzantine period). You may continue along the marked footpath to reach Agios Panteleimonas chapel and the homonymous beach, followed by Maltezi beach right afterwards.
What to see in Katapola Amorgos
